Refuge

The performance was inspired by interviews with a community of young people living in London who while on the run experienced a limit situation. A stage composition balanced on the border between physical theatre and concert featuring seven musical and dance performers.
They set off on a journey. From fear. With no guarantees. 
The paths of three people intersect. Connected to each other, they overcome a region landscape terrain of anxiety, courage, failure and compassion. They seek shelter in an indifferent world. 
When there is nowhere to return to, all that is left is to be awakened.

Today, more than 60 million people are displaced globally by conflict, violence, disasters and human rights violations – A total bigger than the population of the United Kingdom.
Refugees become commodity, traded between states. Erosion of refugee rights, driven by confused and frightened public opinions is often stirred up by irresponsible politicians, they use refugees as a political football to support their local and national interests. 
On average, 20 people are driven from their homes every minute, or 1 every three seconds  – less than the time it takes you to read this sentence.

We are watching three people taking flight… They are trying to summon hope, faith and courage for a journey with uncertain destination. It is this common fate that brings them together and their emotions that often come to the edge merge into a powerful chord. The gradual rebuilding of trust, support and understanding is for them a kind of prayer. The enthusiasm of arriving in the promised land is, however, soon replaced by waking up into the sober truth of reality. REFUGE is an extraordinary piece in the way it utilises movement material and, thanks to the outstanding performance of the actors, communicates a clear message. Neither in the eastern, nor in the western civilisation, but inside one’s own soul, in one’s own faith. This (ab)solution is communicated to us by Viliam Dočolomanský with his Farm in the Cave, especially in their new piece called Refuge.
The aim of the performance is not to shock on the most superficial level. Yet from the very first moments when the actors and the live band make their dynamic appearance on stage, the spectators are shaken in their composure, their sense of superiority and their preconceived beliefs.

Viliam Dočolomanský comes from Slovakia, where already in school he focused on movement theatre and music. He graduated from the theatre direction program at JAMU (Janáček Academy of Arts) in Brno and completed his doctorate at DAMU (Theatre Academy) in Prague. After several experiences as a guest director, he founded his own international theatre studio Farm in the Cave (Farma v jeskyni) as a modern laboratory for performers working on the border of physical, dance and musical theatre. He has won a number of awards, including European Theatre Prize New Theatrical Realities, Total Theatre Award, Herald Angel Award, the Alfréd Radok Award, Dance Piece of the Year 2016, the Respekt Magazine award for best dance work and others. 

Minh Hieu Ti NGUYEN (France/Vietnam)
She is collaborating with Farm in the Cave since 2011 not only as a performer but also as a as researcher.  She has been nominated in 2016 as Dancer of the year by Opera Plus and Czech Dance Platform for her interpretation in « Disconnected ». She works with physical and contemporary theatre, dance and circus artists across Europe as pedagog, theatre and choreographic supervision . She collaborated with physical theatre artists as Laboratorio of Castaldo, Katharina Seyferth, choreographers as Pascal Delhay, La Ribot, directors as Michel Mathieu. She attended intensive workshops including : Edivaldo Ernesto, Shanti Vera & Sendic Vazquez, Francisco Cordova Azuela, Diego Sanou, Los INnato, Hofesh Shechter , Peeping Tom, Batsheva, TJ Lowe,  Daniel Abreu, Wendy Houston, Teatr Zar, Atsushi Takenouchi.

Hana Varadzinová
She studied Drama Acting at Janacek Academy of Performing Arts in Brno, where she graduated at 1999. At Drama Faculty, Academy of Performing Arts Prague she got the PhD in the year 2008.
Hana is the member of Farm in the Cave from its beginning (2001) and she performed in all (thirteen) Farm’s productions.
Hana often leads workshops for performers in Czech Republic and abroad. She collaborates Faculty, Academy of Preforming Arts. 

Rin Kin
Freelance performing artists was educated at modern dance and Chinese Ethnic minority Dance at Ganzu Province Art School nad Minzu University of China. He got the scholarship at Latvian Academy od Culture (2016). He collaborated with Beijing 9 Contemporary Dance Theatre (2012 – 2014). Other performance experience: China / Taiwan Youth Art Exchange, 4th Annual National Ethnic Minority Goup Literature and Art Performance(performed self-choreographed contemporary solo and traditional Tibetan Dance). Self performed works – Sleep, Tibetans, People did not move, the heart is far.

Andrej Petrovic, contemporary  dance performer and choreographer, studied at the Conservatoire of J. L. Bella in Banska Bystrica and at Academy of Performing Arts Bratislava where he obtained  the MA degree. He collaborated with: Jaroslav Viňarsky, Dance Studio in Banska Bystrica;  Jean Abrau Company in London; Edit Braun Company in Salzburg; Fatou Traore in Brussels; Giorgio Barberio Corsetti and Fatore Kappa in Rome. Since  2007 he has been a member of Akram Khan Company in London and from  2010  as an assistant to Choreographer Akram Khan. He collaborated on projects such as the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Summer Olympics ;-‘Giselle’ ( English National Ballet  London ) — nominated  Olivier Award 2017 . As  independent choreographer Andrej’s work includes :-  Rashomon Effect  (National Youth Company in London) Fifth in Dora Barta Company in Budapest; The Tempest in SND, L / One of the seven – Martina Hajdyla Lacová in Prague (nominated for both Annual Prize Opera plus 2017 for choreography and Thalia Award for its interpretation).
