Mutus Liber

Mutus Liber (Silent Book, 1677) is an alchemist’s book without words, a guide in pictures on manufacturing the Philosopher’s Stone. Handa Gote Research & Development’s performance is inspired by the mute language of this book which depicts in complex steps each phase leading to a “masterwork“. More than the Philosopher’s Stone, Handa Gote is interested in the world of work itself, handiwork and craftsmanship. By referencing tables from The Silent Book, performing small activities and handcraft the group seeks to restore the “magic of work“. 

Handa Gote quietly advocates intricate work, physical reality and fascination with these phenomena at a time when virtual representation and virtual communication habits have come to substitute natural processes.

About the company

Handa Gote Research & Development is devoted to experiment with dramaturgy, the inclusion of non-theatre elements in its work and the development of its own concept of post-dramatic and post-spectacular theatre. For many years the group has taken inspiration from science and technology. The group conducts continuous research of theatrical language, laboratory work in the fields of sound and light design, all the while questioning these disciplines. (The group promotes the use of the terms visual dramaturgy and light dramaturgy over the term “design“.). Over the past ten years Handa Gote Research & Development has consistently referred to the various elements of DIY culture – from the approaches of the self-taught handiman  to a reliably  clumsy  aesthetic. 

Venue

Alfred ve dvoře, produced by Motus, is a space for live art, presenting progressive artistic creations and unique, authorial projects by Czech and international artists and performers. The performances it presents are open to all relevant influences, combining different forms of theatre that foreground the body with new technological possibilities of the present.
